Porch Bulb Project Goes State-Wide!

In November, Groundwork Denver initiated "Take Charge: Student Energy Education and Action", through which high school and college students around the state will become Student Energy Ambassadors to implement the Porch Bulb Project and educate their own communities about energy efficiency, renewable energy and green jobs. The project is funded by ARRA 2009 grants awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration and is sponsored by Colorado's Department of Labor and Employment, Workforce Development Council and State Energy Sector Partnership.

Green Team bikes 700 Miles!

Our youth Green Team "rides the talk" by using bicycles to get from job to job. In early November, they hit the 700 mile mark, collectively reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 3,500 lbs and burning 336,000 calories.

GW USA Washington DC Assembly

Groundwork Denver joined staff and youth from Groundwork sites around the country for a highly effective assembly and youth summit in Washington DC this October. Highlights included an EPA open house where different Groundwork projects were profiled and a youth servce project to clean up the Anacostia River. On hand for the youth project were Mike Shapiro, EPA Deputy Assistant Administrator for Water; David Lloyd, EPA Director for the Office of Brownfields and Land Revitalization; and Mickey Fearn, Deputy Director of the National Park Service. Eagles and Buffalo and Deer Oh My - by Tangier Barnes
Volunteering at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is no ordinary urban volunteer experience. Located in Commerce City, the Rocky Mountain Arsenal once led the nation in chemical weapons manufacturing. However, the former arsenal site is now one of the best examples of short grass prairie restoration and is home to a buffalo herd, coyotes, deer, water fowl and other birds and many native short grass prairie plant species.

On October 30th, against a backdrop of native prairie, eagles and deer, over 60 volunteers gathered at the arsenal to collect seeds from native plant species and to remove old silt fencing once used as prairie dog barriers. Seeds from particular species of plants, like the Hopi Tea plant, are sought out by arsenal employees as part of the on-going habitat restoration.

For many it was their first time at the Arsenal, but for others like the Groundwork Denver Green Team, it was one of many meaningful days spent helping to restore this special habitat. The work was unique and we appreciate all those who participated. Thank you to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal for ensuring that our volunteers had a meaningful experience.

Strive to Not Drive - by Heidi Warner
As part of the Denver Climate Challenge and the Strive to Not Drive project, several events were held in the Berkeley neighborhood during the month of September as part of Car-Free Month. Events included "Bicycle Exploration" at Cesar Chavez Park and a free "Transit Rideabout" for residents to familiarize themselves with Denver's public transportation system.

Benefits from this project will not only accrue to participants in the program, but to all Denver residents. Reducing the number of cars on the road improves air quality and decreases CO2 emissions, bettering personal and public health. By walking, biking and riding closer to home, residents support local businesses, making their neighborhoods stronger and more vital. The Strive to Not Drive project will soon expand into other neighborhoods in northwest Denver. Visit www.StrivetoNotDrive.org to find great resources to help you get out of your car and walk, bike and ride public transit more often.

Youth National Park Internships - by Shane Wright
Groundwork Denver's Rocky Mountain Green Team worked hard all summer to become our future community and environmental leaders. They completed acres of ecological restoration work at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal and Rocky Mountain National Park. They learned many "lessons in the thicket" as they removed 840 Russian Olive trees and the invasive Houndstongue plant from 40 acres of thorny Locust thicket soon to be Bison habitat at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal.

They ended their summer with a three week internship at Rocky Mountain National Park, where they worked side-by-side with National Park staff to complete 120 hours of tundra restoration, picnic area construction and trail building. The Groundwork Green Team youth truly are the faces of our future. It is an honor to work with them and it gives hope that the future is bright.

Thanks to PCL Construction, The Starbucks Foundation, Adolph Coors Foundation, Xcel Energy Foundation, John G. Duncan Trust, Wells Fargo, Denver Office of Economic Development, Denver Urban Gardens, and the National Park Service for sponsoring jobs for 17 youth in two Green Teams in 2010.

International Day of Climate Action - by Danny Trujillo
On October 10th Groundwork Denver volunteers joined the 350.org international day of climate action. Across the globe, people in 188 countries at 7,000 different "work parties" worked to directly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Projects included solar panel installations, tree planting and weatherization. Groundwork Denver's energy action in West Colfax neighborhood, culimated a successful year of measurable CO2 emissions reduction. All the volunteers who helped this year should be extremely proud of the following achievements:

Porch Bulbs Swapped: 3,600
Recycling Sign-ups: 645
Tree Sign-ups: 869
Junk Mail Cancelled: 560
Energy Audit Signups: 2,720
2010 Volunteer Action CO2 Emissions Reduction: 1160 tons per year!

Fundraising in Fall - by Tangier Barnes
From educational displays, to live music, guests took advantage of the opportunity to mingle in the cozy backyard environment of Groundwork Denver at our fall fundraising bash on October 7th.

The lively and educational atmosphere provided an opportunity for guests to learn about current initiatives and projects and about our success in 2010, while recognizing our youth Green Team, funders and other supporters. Towards the end of the evening, I took note of the light hearted conversation and smiling faces in our backyard and thought to myself that all of us here at Groundwork Denver are truly fortunate. The genuine interest in and support of our projects enables us to work effectively as a team, and reinforces why we have chosen Groundwork Denver as our team.

A special thank you to everyone who attended and to those who donated or provided discounts for this event, including CEC Middle College, Great Divide Brewing Co. and Mondo Vino. We hope all who attended enjoyed the evening. We certainly did!

Community Action. Environmental Results.

The mission of Groundwork Denver is to bring about the sustained improvement of the physical environment
and promote health and well-being through community-based partnerships and action.
