Globeville Valley Redevelopment

Key Connections

Globeville Valley Redevelopment

The Globeville Valley consists of a series of vacant parcels primarily owned by the Public Service Company of Colorado (PSCO), the City of Denver, ASARCO, and a few private owners. The valley is about three blocks long and two blocks wide, with dirt roads, residences, horse stables and historic buildings all of which are in conformance with the City of Denver’s ordinances through “grandfather” clauses.

This former superfund site has been plagued by illegal dumping, crime, and vandalism. Despite the current condition of the property, nearby residents see the improvement of the Valley as an opportunity to address connectivity and crime issues, foster physical activity, provide opportunities for urban gardening and farmers’ markets, and enhance the neighborhood overall.

These are the issues that have inspired the Globeville Valley Improvement Project (GVIP). The project presents the opportunity for a unique community-led process to support physical activity and healthy eating in a neighborhood with a significant percentage of residents at-risk for negative health impacts of obesity and nutrition-related diseases. The vision for the site, developed by residents and other stakeholders over the last nine months, includes an accessible playground that will serve all children in the neighborhood including those attending Laradon Hall (a few blocks away), a trail that connects the surrounding neighborhood with a park to the south and the Platte River Trail to the east, trees and native plantings, a community garden, and a flexible space for educational events, a farmers market, or other local enterprises.

Groundwork Denver is working with the community to bring the vision to the next level of design and implementation over the next two years.
